Moxie Art in a Box: A Cultural Exchange That Inspires Connection and Contribution

In a world that often feels divided, the power of art and cultural exchange brings communities together in the most remarkable ways. Recently, Palm Springs Sister Cities hosted the "Moxie Art in a Box" program, a four week-long educational and cultural exchange that united 4th graders from Vista Del Monte Elementary in Palm Springs and 3rd and 4th graders from Newland School in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Bridging Cultures Through Creativity

The "Moxie Art in a Box" program offered students a unique opportunity to explore their cultural identities and those of their peers through the traditional Mexican art of Hojalata (tin art). Over the course of the program, these young artists created meaningful pieces inspired by the elements of their lives and cities, forming a bridge between two vibrant cultures.

Each student received a "Moxie Box" filled with art supplies, including sheets of tin, paints, and stencils. The magic began as students, separated by geography but united in purpose, embarked on a shared journey of artistic discovery and self-expression.

Connecting Across Borders

The program consisted of four virtual classroom sessions, conducted in both English and Spanish. During these sessions, students shared their progress, exchanged stories, and learned from one another in real-time. They discussed the traditions and symbols that define their communities, from the desert landscapes of Palm Springs to the colorful festivals of San Miguel de Allende.

"It was incredible to see how our students lit up when they saw their counterparts on the screen," said a teacher from Vista Del Monte Elementary. "Language wasn’t a barrier — it was a bridge."

A Celebration of Shared Traditions

The culmination of the program was a virtual exhibition, where the students presented their finished tin art pieces. Each creation told a story: of family traditions, of beloved city landmarks, of dreams for the future. Parents, teachers, and community members attended the online gallery, celebrating the creative achievements of these young ambassadors.

"My favorite part was showing them my tin star," shared one student from San Miguel de Allende. "I made it for my grandma because she loves looking at the stars." One student from Palm Springs said "I love tortas (mexican sandwiches) and horchata (a popular and refreshing mexican drink made with ground rice, milk and cinnamon)."
